out of character

hello everyone! i'm coming out from under a pile of wedding websites to quick post. i think i have about 88 tabs open right now - just to figure out what kind of placecards i want to do. i am a psychopath. the list of ideas i have so far is:

vintage award ribbons
plastic animals
fruit
vegetable seed packets
sugar cookies (names written in icing)
mini succulents (names on flags)
bottles of homemade infused oils
mini jars of curd or jam
tiny embroidery hoops?
strawberry plants?

somehow NONE of these satisfy me, so i keep thinking and browsing and scrawling down ideas. i'm totally losing it.

souffle
frenchtoast

saturday night sam and i went to a skate/dance party, and i dragged a couple of pastry-making girlfriends with; we ended up sequestering ourselves to the kitchen table most of the night, drinking beer and talking pot de creme and soufflés. so when i groggily woke up sunday morning and remembered sam and i were supposed to get engagement (okay, yes, very belated) photos taken that day, i decided to whip together some brunch and try to get us in shape for a day in front of a camera. and with soufflés on the mind, i made these.

savory soufflés
(i made mine with goat cheese and prosciutto)

6 egg whites
3 egg yolks
dash of salt
55 g butter
60 g bread flour
180 mL milk
2 cloves of garlic, minced
4 slices of prosciutto
about 2 oz goat cheese (half a log)
powdered pecorino romano cheese & melted butter for the ramekins

turn the oven to 350. place the prosciutto on a sheet of aluminum and let them crisp up in the oven for ten minutes or so, until good and crunchy, while you divide your eggs, prep your butter, etc. once they're out, turn the oven to 450.

put the egg whites in a bowl, carefully not getting any yolk in them. add a pinch or two of salt. wait.

prepare the ramekins by brushing butter along the sides and then coating them with the powdered cheese. you'll be able to fill about 6 1-cup ramekins.

put the minced garlic in the milk.

once the butter has melted, turn the heat to medium and add the flour. stir with a wooden spoon until it's well combined, and then keep stirring for awhile; it'll bubble, and just keep stirring, to dry it out a bit. stir constantly for 3 minutes or so, then start slowly adding the milk, bit by bit. add milk, let it combine, add more. etc. until all combined. remove from the heat.

stir the cheese and the egg yolks into the bechamel (that's the butter, flour and milk sauce.) once well combined, take the prosciutto and crumble it evenly into the ramekins. now beat the whites until they are stiff peaks. once shiny and stiff, take about 1/4 of the whites and mix them into the yolks/cheese/bechamel to lighten the mixture; then gently fold the rest of the whites in with the yolk mixture.

spoon the fully combined mixture into the ramekins, leaving them just under the top of the ramekin. place them on a baking sheet and then in the oven; immediately turn the heat down to 375. let them bake for 15 minutes or so, until they are risen and browned on top and starting to brown around the sides. voila! delicious, impressive, and way easier than they look.

i don't usually do the hey-look-it's-my-face! photos on here - i just feel weird about it for some reason. this isn't really about what i look like, i just like to feature my personal style, my food, my pretty blessed life. but today i couldn't get the light to pick up on the collar in this shirt, which is obviously the best part of it, so i had to suck it up and do some headshots. i figured it was a chance to show my little locket, anyway.

teal & lace

i was going to stretch for a play on chantilly lace there - shan-teal y lace? - but i'll stop short.

i've been planning today's outfit since about this time last week (sad, but true) when i got an invite to a kate spade and adeline adeline event to take place right after work today. events aren't always my cup of tea - if i don't know someone there, i get kind of nervous and shy - but for kate spade i will suck up my awkward, throw on my best duds and even wear some makeup.

last night was a perfect, quiet one; i came home, took a nice long bath, made some mushroom & goat cheese pasta for dinner, watched an episode of the wire, and sam made us the most perfect garlic butter popcorn. unfortunately we watched & ate in bed, thus leaving ourselves to sleep in salt and popcorn bits. oh well. we're deep sleepers.

i've got my camera ready for tonight so i promise to take lots of pictures and give a full report tomorrow.

oh pleats

good morning! today was the first morning in memory where i didn't have to wear a coat! okay, i got some are-you-crazy looks on the subway, but 50 degrees is downright tropical as far as i'm concerned and i can't WAIT to get rid of the bulk of a winter coat for good. (well, until fall, anyway.) so i bundled up in a thrifted sweater, slipped into this comfy outfit, and headed in to work.

i've always loved pleating; such a beautiful texture, and the way it moves is just so stunning. perhaps my favorite part is the way it ripples at the end.

i've been saving this skirt for a warm enough day to not wear with tights - it's so soft and feels so good swishing against my legs.

i realized i've never posted a good photo of my rings. i wear them every day, so i don't really think of them as accessories but just part of me; they both mean a lot. my engagement ring (bottom) was sam's mom's (she's since upgraded,) the aquamarine was left to me by my grandmother.

tonight sam and i are scoping out a place to watch the big east semi finals - he's a uconn boy and his team beat the number one seed last night (does it sound like i know what i'm talking about? i don't!) so we're pretty pumped to see what happens when they play syracuse tonight. i actually genuinely love watching games of any kind, so i'm pretty psyched for a fun evening of beer and basketball.

and for the rest of the weekend i am looking forward to RELAXING. this week has been absolutely insane and exhausting in the best way, but i need some good r&r - and to finish my damn wedding invitations, for pete's sake!

hope everyone has a lovely weekend, and thanks so much for all the kind words of late!

party time, excellent

bonjourno! well, it is raining in new york today, but the sun seems to be shining down on this brooklynite today, no matter the weather. last night i got to attend bulgari's launch party for their new perfume, bulgari mon jasmin noir. yes, that's why i've been chained to my kitchen for the last few nights - they asked me to design four different petit fours, based on notes in the perfume: jasmine, madarin orange, bergamot, lemon, and nougatine. the scents so perfectly lend themselves desserts, and so rarely do i get an opportunity to conceptualize a project and take it all the way through to the end (usually people tell me exactly what they want, and i make it,) that this was really a dream job for me. i decided on making mandarin orange macarons with bergamot infused buttercream; mini lemon meringue tartlets; smoked almond nougatine, dipped in oaky dark chocolate and sprinkled with smoked sea salt; and a jasmine petit four cake, covered in a honey jasmine glaze and drizzled with white chocolate.

somehow i only managed to snag photos of the finished macarons before dropping them off; a professional photographer was there, though, snapping away, and she promised to send me some pics of the desserts once she's uploaded them, so they'll certainly follow. there was also a [apparently fairly well known] photographer, patrick mcmullan, on hand to take people photos, and he took lots and lots of me, sam, my dad and my friends, so hopefully i'll have a couple of those to share as well.

so, more on that to come - i was just so excited to finally share this big secret thing that has taken over my life (and kitchen) for the last couple of days! i have to give so much credit, love, and praise to my saintly fiancé, sam, for all his help - when i'm up until 4 am baking, i don't clean up after myself, and he's the one who gets stuck with the job. he also sifted ingredients, made grocery store run after run, customized boxes for me so everything would fit just so, and helped me painstakingly top one hundred lemon meringue tartlets with a single gold dragee. he is an angel. i couldn't have done it without him.

but enough basking! today at work we're having a party to welcome a new person, say goodbye to someone departing, and celebrate the wrapping of a job; it was for nascar, so there will be a decidedly nascar theme to the evening - pbr, a nacho bar, and pigs in a blanket are on the menu. (my god, i look back on this and see what a chronic hyphen and semi-colon user i am. i think i have a grammar problem.) a party's a party, however low-brow, so i got a little fancied up for the occasion.

another lilla p top, another ban.do accessory. i've totally blown my ban.do load now - three items in three days, and that's all i've got. this top is going to get a lot of wear, i can tell - so comfy, and in such a pretty color.

all right. that's long enough for now! i've got a nacho bar to set up! i'll have more details of last night's event soon.

zombieland

you know that feeling, when you are so tired you feel like you might throw up? yeah. that. i was up until nearly 4 am last night, but not doing any fun, normal 20-something things like dancing with friends or closing down a bar and grabbing a late night slice - no, i was busy caramelizing sugar for nougatine, tempering chocolate, mixing glaze, decorating cakes, and oh-so-carefully sprinkling edible stars here and there. 9 hours of work and three hours of sleep later, i'm at work, barely keeping my eyelids open, but feeling pretty darn proud of myself - tonight, i'll get to head to the bowery hotel and sip a cocktail while watching my creations be devoured. better still, my dad happens to be in town for the night, so he gets to see my hard work up close and personal. i'm pretty excited.

precisely three hours after hitting my pillow last night, my alarm went of this morning (of course, today of all days i had to come in to work an hour and a half early to let an electrician in!) and i did that thing where i lay in bed and tell myself that if i can decide what i'm going to wear before i get up, i can sleep an extra ten minutes. thankfully, despite being deliriously tired, my brain was still able to come up with an outfit that works, and happens to be darn comfortable to boot.

top: lilla p

i was fortunate enough to be asked to stop by the lilla p showroom yesterday to pick out some pieces to wear as i please; the clothing consists mostly of very comfy, well-made basics, in all sorts of colors. i naturally jumped to the psychotically bright colored part of the rack and quickly picked out a few pieces - this top is the first. i love a good, simple pattern, and i've found myself working a lot more red into my wardrobe recently. i'll be wearing more in the coming days - and hosting a giveaway of one of the pieces, so stay tuned!

okay. i need to chug some coffee and see if i can find some magic in the kitchen that will make my head stop feeling like it weighs about 80 pounds. i hope everyone has a wonderful wednesday - tomorrow, i promise lots of photos (and finally some details!) of the event!

friends in high places

hello! i hope everyone's had a good couple of weeks. mine we spent first living the life of someone much cooler than myself - a friend came to visit two weeks ago, and through his savviness we were able to attend a jimmy fallon taping (the one where justin timberlake was the guest and belle and sebastian were the musical guest - a fantastic preview to the next night, when we saw them play in williamsburg [a heartbreakingly wonderful show. i don't know if i've ever left a concert happier]), a saturday night live dress rehearsal, and then, ridiculously, the snl after party. it was fun, but incredibly surreal for a bunch of reasons - i think there were more celebrities of one caliber or another than there were every day joes such as ourselves; every table was reserved by one of the aforementioned celebrities, so we were forced by default to stand awkwardly in the middle of a bunch of celebrities; and i had, at this point begun to develop a pretty nasty cold, the party didn't start until 1 am, and i had to work at 7 the next morning.

so. week 1 spent in a fury of activity, and most of week 2 spent in bed, surrounded by used kleenex, watching show after show on hulu and eating nothing but chicken noodle soup. i guess everything balances itself out. i'm still nursing away what must be the worst cold of my adult life (15 days later i still have a cough and the sniffles) but i've started to dig myself out and get to work. with the wedding 8 months away, and on a saturday in june, i'm anxious to get save the dates in the mail; i've almost completed the pile now. i changed the colors to match what i guess will be our wedding colors (although i don't really see myself sticking to just two) and i've been writing out the addresses with a kind of crappy calligraphy marker. i think i need to upgrade.

but anyway! the goods. a recipe AND an outfit! in one day! i'm trying to make up for lost time.

squid ink fettucine a la audrey

so! i made my own pasta for this one. it sounds like a pain, and it kind of is, but i'm telling you, fresh pasta is so so so so SO much better than anything you can buy at the store. so much. i put squid ink in here because i'd picked some up at a fish market a few weeks ago and intended to use it for, i don't know, something (buy random ingredients at stores and force yourself to use them. i find it gets me making things i never would otherwise) and decided to throw it in here. you can buy little packets like the one i used here. they're cheap! and while they didn't make a huge difference in taste that i could tell (i think it did make the pasta a bit saltier,) they sure do make it look good.

so! for the pasta.

3/4 c semolina flour
1/4 t salt
1 egg
1 T water
1 T olive oil

whisk salt & flour and make a well; add egg, squid ink, water, and olive oil. mix with a wooden spoon until it's combinded, then knead for about 8-10 minutes, until it's pretty smooth and elastic-y. wrap it in plastic and let it rest for at least 20 minutes. then use a pasta machine (or roll it out if you are a better woman than i) to roll it out, bit by bit, until it's pasta thin and cut into fettucine. let it dry while you prepare. .

2 egg yolks
1 large portabello mushroom cap, cut into bite sized cubes
2 small zucchini, washed then sliced into ribbons with a peeler

boil a pot of water. once it's at a rolling boil, drop in the pasta and cook until tender with a splash of olive oil in the water. strain pasta but save some water; get a sautee pan heating up and add in mushrooms and a splash or two of pasta water. once mushrooms start to cook, add zucchini; keep adding pasta water as needed (whenever it's all cooked off, add another splash until the zucchini and mushrooms are sauteed to softness.) add pasta to sautee pan, mix together, then turn off heat; immediately mix in the two egg yolks, stirring quickly so they don't cook at the bottom of the pan. season to taste and voila! few ingredients but tons of flavor. my new go-to pasta.

aaand lastly, outfit! i went to the flea market saturday with some long-lost friends and had a really nice time, despite snotting and sneezing all over the place the whole time. my outfit for shopping (although i didn't buy anything. . .)

wowee zowee

last night sam and i went to see pavement in central park. it was a gorgeous night; somehow the humidity of the day disappeared and we arrived to the golden soundz of stephen malkmus. i'd originally planned on bringing a picnic, but we got caught up watching top chef:just desserts (my boss [and friend] eric is a contestant on the show, so if you watch, look out for him! a very talented baker and all-around sweet dude) and the potato salad i'd made to bring was all but gone by the time we were ready to head into manhattan. it was DELICIOUS though, so here is the recipe, which i adapted from one on epicurious. if you're a fan of salt and vinegar chips, do it, have a picnic, and enjoy the last few days of summer weather before we retreat into fall (my favorite time of year.)

salt and vinegar potato salad

about a pound of fingerling potatoes, scrubbed well
half a red onion
1/3 c apple cider vinegar
white pepper
ground bay leaves
celery salt
fresh ground paper
kosher salt or fleur de sel
paprika
ground ginger
1/2 c olive oil

cut the onion into long, thin slices and pour the apple cider vinegar over it; let that steep while you prep the potatoes. steam them for about 10 minutes or so - just until a fork will go into them easily. rinse them in cold water and let them cool off a bit. cut them into bite sized pieces and add them to the onions and vinegar, and add a couple of dashes of each of the spices. alternatively you can use old bay seasoning - the original recipe called for it, but i realized too late i didn't have it and had to improvise (and was pretty happy with the results, if i do say so myself.) salt liberally, add the olive oil, and voila! i should warn that the amounts here are approximated - i kind of eyeballed while making it.

today sam and i are heading to the beach for a couple of days of sun, surfing, and fishing; this weekend it's supposed to get up to almost 90, and i'm going to make the most of it!

bonne bastille!

bonjour! happy bastille day everyone! i happened to (not planned, i swear,) manage to wear red, white and blue both to bake in this am and now to continue my day in. it's a full one, too; home for a quick post, then heading to the new museum to see what's what, then to a friend's going away party this evening. my weekend has been planned for months - a couple of my best friends are getting married, and i have the honor of not only baking the cake and making the dinner, but i also get to revise my roll as reverend audrey of the universal church of life. it should be a wonderful few days.

and where the hell have i been? everywhere, it feels, except home! i've been working tons, and in a hot bakery at that- and with the summer we've been having in new york, working in a hot kitchen wears you out faster than any workout i've tried. the last couple of weekends have been spent with sam, upstate at a bed and breakfast, relaxing and fishing and swimming. . . all without internet access. this is my last weekend out of town for a couple of weeks, at least, so hopefully i'll be a bit more prolific.

this is a quick one, but i have another lined up for later, i promise!

be well, stay cool!

peter pan

hello!

my friend amy is visiting from portland so i've had a pretty action-packed couple of days. last night we went to a friend's going away party in williamsburg and ended up drinking, dancing, and karaoking (my signature song, forgot about dre) until past four am, when we finally poured ourselves onto the g and somehow found our way home. i woke up this morning with a mostly-eaten bowl of popcorn by my face and a half drunk beer next to it. and so it goes.

now as we prepare to get ready, a quick anecdote, an outfit, and a see you later. once about a year and a half ago i was on my way to work, riding our elevator (which was shiny and silver and served as a full length mirror) up to the 6th floor. i caught my reflection in the door and paused. my outfit reminded me of something, but i couldn't figure out exactly what. i walked in and passed a couple of the designers in my office and one of them burst out laughing. "you look exactly like link from zelda!" it's true - i was wearing my yellow american apparel pocketed skirt, a bright green deep v, knee-high pointy suede flat boots. all i was missing was a bow and arrow. this outfit reminded me of that - i realized about halfway through the day that i bore a strong resemblance to peter pan. oh well. i just got these boots on super crazy amazing sale and i looooove them.

diamonds on the soles of her shoes

last night i went out to astoria and had a delicious, home-cooked meal of stewed eggplant and capers and sheeps-milk ricotta over pasta with garlic bread and pecan pie al la mode for dessert. my friends there had all lived in or extensively visited chicago at some point, and we spent a lot of time talking about the merits of this city versus that. as i start to plan my return back to the windy city, i recognize that it isn't just that i love chicago and want to return; going back there is going to be like hitting the refresh button on my old life there, keeping the good things and getting to change the things that i felt stuck in before. i'll get a new apartment (alone, hallelujah,) a new job, one in a field that i love; my time in new york has changed me fundamentally into a much more independent and happy person, and i can't wait to get to experience the city i love more than any other through these new eyes.

i was taking a car home from queens after all this last night, a couple beers later, and thinking about this blog and what a strange and funny thing it can be. i identify myself as many things: a cook, a friend, an artist, a lover of life and music and food and fun and, of course, clothing. but clothing isn't how i define myself, or, i think, my strongest interest. i write this blog most mornings, monday through friday, and gab for a bit about what i did the night before, post a photo, tell you where i got everything, and sign off. i was wondering last night how this came to be the way that i tell you guys who i am. staring out the window, zipping down the BQE, i thought i could just as easily post a photo of what i ate for dinner every night, or the train car that i rode in, the song i listened to on my ipod this morning (99% it's just NPR, i'm a nerd) or the state of my increasingly, horrifyingly disastrous bedroom. but i do believe, as i think many of you do, that the way we present ourselves to the world every day says a lot about you as a person. i take care in getting dressed because i like to. because i like clothes and i like feeling good in what i'm wearing and bright colors and pretty things make me happy. i started doing this because i so enjoy looking at other people's blogs of a similar nature - i don't think of "fashion" or "styling" as my art, but there are so many people who are so much more deft and skilled at this than i that i think it really transcends to that. and i love seeing what everyone does when presented with a nearly limitless number of options when it comes to what to wear.

anyway, i guess i just wanted to thank everyone for continuing to read, and for all the amazingly sweet and kind things that you say. i love reading about other peoples' lives and daily nothings, and it is beyond flattering that anyone cares enough to check in on mine.

enough of the diatribe, though -

i definitely have beatles hair this morning. the awkward lack-of-haircut gets ever more awkward.

couldn't find the brooch i usually wear with this shirt, which was a bummer. may try to stop in an urban outfitters (i have a gift certificate) and snag one at lunch.

new trick

hey look what i can do!

my night was nice and quiet. i wish i'd thought to take some photos at the book party last night - it took place in jeffrey, a really beautiful and completely out-of-my-price-range boutique in the meat packing district. had a couple of drinks, ate rum-injected bundt cake, furtively caressed dresses that cost more than i make in 6 months. afterwards headed to grab sushi with a girl from class and then, miraculously, found myself home and in bed before 11 pm. glory.

also!! found fleet foxes/blitzen trapper tickets for when i'm in portland next weekend. can't wait. the album was probably my top-played last year and i bet it'll be divine live.

new york is cold, rainy, and disgusting today, and i am TIRED of it. my legs long to be bare in a bright sun. but, alas, this morning i once again donned a pair of tights and trudged to the office.

shirt/dress: anthropologie
skirt: american apparel
tights: HUE
booties: alice & olivia for payless, ebayed

i guess that's all for now. if this rain keeps up i may use it as an excuse to skip home after work instead of going out; but i often think that to myself, and yet i always find myself dancing at a brooklyn bar at 2 am, holding a beer.

have a lovely weekend, everyone -

cinderella

well, i was late waking up this morning, and didn't have time to take a photo; but this post's title is apt not only because i hid in the broom closet to take this, but because at last i found my beautiful slippers! well, by found i mean they arrived in the mail, and by slippers i mean miraculous, wear-em-three-ways pumps by devotte, but still. i think the metaphor stands.

actually, the fairy tale doesn't end there! a week or so ago i aired some grievances i had with SOTTO boutique, near portland, OR, where i'd ordered the shoes from. i'm here to tell you that they not only sent me the shoes, but have found a customer in life for me: a girl who works there got in touch with me after 3 weeks of me trying to contact them, apologized profusely, and told me to pick something else off the website that they'd send along, free of charge, as an apology gift. i chose the blouse i'm wearing today, and i have to say, it is absolutely gorgeous. pure silk, scalloped ruffles, a matching bow belt.

i also want to say, in sotto's defense, that there site crashed as they were moving offices, which would cause anyone to fall behind, and they certainly more than rectified the situation. the girls who buy for them have impeccable taste and great sales on beautiful things. check them out.

i have so many new things to post this week. stay tuned.

weekend recap

happy monday everyone! insomnia struck me last night for the second sunday in a row, but for some reason i feel pretty alert today. maybe all the extra sleep on wednesday and thursday are carrying over. who am i to question it?

this weekend was short and wonderful. friday night was spent dancing in windows and taking shots with spramps and some of her friends. couches acquired. high-fives given and received. glasslands dance party sneaking. and dancing, naturally. saturday we had brunch and a lazy day spent in the sun, dipping in and out of boutiques, smoking on a roof and then going to a loft party in brooklyn and eating a giant slice of pizza in the back of a tahoe. yesterday i finally slept in, had brunch, then spent the evening sewing and cleaning my bedroom.

the result of some of that sewing is this shirt, which was a never-worn american apparel short sleeved shirt (one of the first things i ever bought at american apparel, i remember the stars in my eyes when i walked out with it.) i cut off the sleeves, hemmed them in, and added this panel of distressed shirt fabric from a tank top i'd unraveled a few weeks ago. ta-da!

shirt: reconstructed by me
skirt: american apparel
tights: same
shoes: pour la victoire

class tonight, then hopefully i have more luck sleeping. hope everyone has a pleasant monday.

uno

good morning and happy monday! i woke up this morning before my alarm and got to work a bit early, because THAT'S how refreshed i feel after this weekend of sun and fabulous weather. i went to anthropologie after work on friday and picked up this skirt for $20, despite the fact that it was about 2 sizes too big for me and kind of looked awful. i liked the idea of it and figured it wouldn't be too hard to take it in on one side since it was an off-center skirt to begin with. and it turned out great!

i ended up sleeping at a penthouse in the upper west side that some friends were housesitting, so this outfit lasted me most of the weekend. i kept hoping i would run into the sartorialist; i finally felt worthy. the full thing:

shirt: an old slip i thrifted years ago, turned into a shirt
skirt: anthropologie, tailored to fit
belt: anthropologie
tights: anthropologie
sweater: old, thrifted
shoes: payless
new purse!: cool antique shop on the lower east side

and for this morning, back to drab; it's pouring outside and the temperature has dropped to the low 50's (which, frankly, still sounds really nice to me.)

shirt: anthropologie
necklace: erica weiner
skirt: american apparel
stirrup tights: american apparel
shoes: thrifted from etsy

i just posted a ton of photos from the weekend on my facebook page and don't particularly feel like pontificating much here, so maybe i'll post more later! hope everyone had as good a weekend as i did (although it seems unlikely.)
