i wear my heart on my heart

hello and happy monday! just took a leisurely walk home with my coat wide open - it's almost 50 degrees out, sunny and gorgeous. just wanted to do a quick post with the recipe from the macaroni i made the other day - i cannot recommend it highly enough - an outfit, and the news that i made the weardrobe top 100!

ha, and i happen to be wearing the same skirt and socks as i am today. anyway, i am beyond flattered to be included in the 100, and i want to send a huge thank you and big love to rich and suz over at weardobe.

and today - i've posted this sweater before, but it was long ago before i had a proper camera and i love it too much to let it fall by the wayside.

could not get a non-blurry photo to save my life. i think one of the lights in my dressing room is out.

sweater: craft and vintage fair, years ago in chicago
skirt: american apparel
socks: american apparel
shoes: oak nyc
belt: thrifted
headband: vintage, flea market

off to philly this weekend to hang with sam and hopefully do some thrifting - i'm hoping to launch my etsy shop early next week!

and for the dutch macaroni and cheese - very closely adapted from bon appetit. . . (i added more of some, changed a thing here or there, and cooked it longer.)

INGREDIENTS
6-7 tablespoons (3/4 stick) butter, divided
1 cup chopped onion
3-4 garlic cloves, minced
1/4 cup unbleached all purpose flour
3 cups reduced-fat (2%) milk
2 cups (packed) coarsely grated aged Gouda cheese plus 1/2 cup finely grated (about 10 ounces total)
2 cups (packed) coarsely grated Edam cheese, divided
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
a pinch or two of ground fennel
1 bunch Swiss chard, stems and center ribs removed
12 ounces elbow macaroni
1 1/2 cup fresh breadcrumbs made from crustless sourdough bread
mustard seeds for topping, if you want

PREPARATION
Melt 3 tablespoons butter in large pot over medium heat. Add onion; sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in garlic, then flour; stir constantly 1 minute. Gradually whisk in milk. Cook, whisking occasionally, until mixture begins to boil, about 5 minutes. Add 2 cups coarsely grated Gouda and 1 cup Edam. Stir until cheeses melt, about 2 minutes. Stir in cayenne and nutmeg. Season sauce with salt and pepper.
Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter 13x9x2-inch baking dish. Cook chard in large pot of boiling salted water until tender, about 1 minute. Using slotted spoon, transfer chard to plate; cool. Reserve pot with water. Squeeze water from chard; chop finely.
Return water in pot to boil. Add macaroni; cook until tender but still firm to bite, stirring occasionally. Drain. Stir macaroni into warm cheese sauce. Place half of macaroni in dish; smooth top. Top with 1 cup Edam cheese, then chard. Top with remaining macaroni mixture; spread evenly.
Melt 4 tablespoons butter. Place breadcrumbs in medium bowl. Drizzle butter over; toss. Add 1/2 cup finely grated Gouda and sprinkle with salt and pepper; toss. Sprinkle breadcrumb mixture over mac and cheese. Sprinkle mustard seeds over, if desired.
Bake mac and cheese until breadcrumbs are golden and edges are bubbling, about 45-50 minutes. Let stand 10 minutes. It gets better every time you stick it back in the oven.

up a creek without a paddle

epic blogging fail: i left for chicago sunday morning and forgot my camera charger. fail #2: i left the camera on in my purse so i can't even upload the ones i'd taken before it died. so i'm going to search high and low for someone in chicago with a lumix charger they're willing to lend me (readers, if you're out there, i will buy you a drink for some battery juice) and until then, this is my weak excuse for a post.

the weardrobe conference was absolutely incredible. i feel so completely lucky to have been included in the event. aside from the piles of free stuff that was bestowed on us, the complementary meals, etc, i got to meet 20 of the coolest girls of all time. lots of photos and details to follow, but i wanted to sign on to register my immense gratitude to all the folks at weardrobe for letting me be a part of something so rad.

the last couple of days have been a bit of a whirlwind, and i'm only in chicago for a few days to attempt to find an apartment; so please forgive my sporadic posting (and lack of outfits, which is absolutely KILLING me because i got so much fantastic stuff this weekend that i want to show off.) fortunately i have SOMETHING to post - the sweet folks at beautiful stranger posted an interview/featurette on me on their blog this morning. it's an older outfit but one of my favorites:

you can check out the interview here.

until we meet again. . .

yesterme, yesteryou

yesterday i woke up late and had crepes with my new friend kt who lives upstairs, then did a slow meander over to urban outfitters to finally spend my gift card from winning the romper contest a few weeks ago. i found an adorable dress that is part of the hawks line - geren ford for urban outfitters. i had heard the brand name before but never really looked at his stuff (i am kind of label retarded) but the dress is gorgeous and i have a new brand to covet. i think i'm saving it for the weardrobe meetup in central park on sunday. (sunday, sunday, sunday. i kept thinking it was on saturday. beating it into my brain.)

this dress was my roommate rachel's, i borrowed it a few times and stared at it covetously every time i was in her room. she didn't wear it much so we arranged a swap - my black greek lady dress that i hemmed up a couple weeks ago for her zachary's smile re-worked blue jersey dress. it is so comfortable and i love the straps.

dress: zachary's smile, from rachel
necklace: ebay
shoes: borrowed from vanessa, charles david

a whole day off today, and little to do with it - which sounds glorious.

have a lovely almost-friday,

jane fonda

hello again! okay, the repairmen seem to have been gone, so i managed a few quick shots. this is my favorite borrowed piece from the weardobe closet; it's ridiculously tiny, and i don't think i'll be able to eat today without popping a button, but i love the color and the silk feels awesome. i do kind of feel like a dharma initiative member in it, though. it's somewhat janitor-ish.

i have a huge test in school today and i am kind of panicking about it, since i missed two classes last week and am completely unprepared. i have some homework to catch up on, as well, so i think i'm going to keep this brief and get to work!

jumpsuit: vintage, borrowed from the weardrobe closet
shoes: pour la victoire
belt: thrifty

okay! i hope everyone has a great wednesday (i can't believe it's already wednesday,) i'll be more chatty tomorrow!

this one's for katie

good morning! there are currently air conditioning repairmen banging around in my broom closet at work, so i have to wait to sneak in and take photos. in the meantime, a quick outfit post for katie, who wants me to wear nothing but yellow.

dress: vintage, thrifted
necklace: urban outfitters
shoes: some shop in union square

this necklace was included in the package i got from weardrobe yesterday; they included a couple of surprise pieces, and this was one of them.

hopefully what i'm actually wearing today soon to come -
