white collar girl

combo
_DSC0262.jpg_effected

nothing new or notable here, just a quick outfit post (a more substantial, VIDEO-INCLUDED, post to come this afternoon) - i ordered this cute little pearl collar off etsy only to realize, once it arrived in my hot little hands, that it was about big enough to around my bicep and not much else. no matter! i cut it carefully in half, stitched the ends to secure the pearls, and sewed two ribbons, about 5 inches long, between the two halves. voila! a pearl collar.

welcome to the jungle

i came home last night and, with the help of a friend, made some decent invitation progress, and downed about 3 pounds worth of crab rangoon and chicken lo mein.

i picked up this little gold giraffe pin for $3 in a thrift store in florida, and decided to combine it with the rhinestoned one i already had and start a giraffe brooch collection; sam says he hope it doesn't interfere with his money collection. har har.

dress: anna sui for anthropologie (on super sale!)
scalloped slip: thrifted
tights: hansel from basel
shoes: rachel comey
belt: thrifted
brooches: gold one thrifted, the other two from the best of everything

my brain feels empty today. right before getting on the plane to come home sunday night sam and i chugged a beer (don't judge,) and i spent the entirety of the flight with a burp painfully lodged in my chest - so i spent the entire 3 hours tarzan-pounding my sternum to try to make it escape (which it failed to do until we landed.) i looked insane, and now i have faint bruises all over my chest. oy.

well, i suppose that's all from me for now. we're out of half and half so i'm drying to choke down some black coffee so's my eyes will stay awake for the rest of the day.

until tomorrow,

zombieland

you know that feeling, when you are so tired you feel like you might throw up? yeah. that. i was up until nearly 4 am last night, but not doing any fun, normal 20-something things like dancing with friends or closing down a bar and grabbing a late night slice - no, i was busy caramelizing sugar for nougatine, tempering chocolate, mixing glaze, decorating cakes, and oh-so-carefully sprinkling edible stars here and there. 9 hours of work and three hours of sleep later, i'm at work, barely keeping my eyelids open, but feeling pretty darn proud of myself - tonight, i'll get to head to the bowery hotel and sip a cocktail while watching my creations be devoured. better still, my dad happens to be in town for the night, so he gets to see my hard work up close and personal. i'm pretty excited.

precisely three hours after hitting my pillow last night, my alarm went of this morning (of course, today of all days i had to come in to work an hour and a half early to let an electrician in!) and i did that thing where i lay in bed and tell myself that if i can decide what i'm going to wear before i get up, i can sleep an extra ten minutes. thankfully, despite being deliriously tired, my brain was still able to come up with an outfit that works, and happens to be darn comfortable to boot.

i was fortunate enough to be asked to stop by the lilla p showroom yesterday to pick out some pieces to wear as i please; the clothing consists mostly of very comfy, well-made basics, in all sorts of colors. i naturally jumped to the psychotically bright colored part of the rack and quickly picked out a few pieces - this top is the first. i love a good, simple pattern, and i've found myself working a lot more red into my wardrobe recently. i'll be wearing more in the coming days - and hosting a giveaway of one of the pieces, so stay tuned!

okay. i need to chug some coffee and see if i can find some magic in the kitchen that will make my head stop feeling like it weighs about 80 pounds. i hope everyone has a wonderful wednesday - tomorrow, i promise lots of photos (and finally some details!) of the event!

hiya, stud[s]

so, quickly, some interesting news that will, hopefully, bode well for this blog. i recently decided to leave the bakery and get a more jobby-job. i love baking (obviously) and it's definitely still what i want to do with the rest of my life, but after a long time at baked (for some reason i never named it while i worked there - i guess i felt weird doing so, but it's a great place, and anyone in new york should check it out!) i felt a bit creatively stifled and, to be frank, financially challenged. ah, the food industry - home to so many passionate poor people. i'm a grown up now (i guess,) and i'm getting married soon (aaaaah!) and i decided it was time to start putting some serious money away, and getting weekends off for a change. thankfully, i am really happy in the office i ended up - it's a creative place, and i'm carving out a little catering niche for myself so i still get to bake on a nearly-daily basis.

the good news for the blog, though, is that a desk job at a creative office means wearing what i want every day, and ample time to blog about it! i missed the last couple of days, and this morning would have been comedic for any outsider to witness - me with my big ol' camera, propping it up and then posing, checking the shot, and trying a different space. i did try a couple in the utility closet for old time's sake, but it's a tight squeeze, so i'll have to figure out a way to shove myself in there. i was clearly uncomfortable trying this morning.

i've settled, for now, for a corner right behind my desk.

tights: both pairs by HUE
necklace: a mashup of chain from accessorize, locket from ebay, and shoe clip from devotte

i've been gravitating to all things embellished lately - i think it's an easy way for a pattern wuss like me to gently break into a bit of mixing and matching.

i've been making macarons for an order this week and was able to bring in the leftovers for my office to enjoy; both sam and i's waistlines will be very grateful that i finally have somewhere to bring my pastries.

until tomorrow,

hello hello! the last couple of weeks have been kind of a blur - i keep doing the thing where i half-write a blog post in my head, but then never find the time to actually sit down and type it out. i've filled my camera's memory card entirely at this point, so it's definitely time to play a little blogger catch-up.

almost two weeks ago now i took a day off work to attend the lucky fashion blogger conference. i rarely get to do this kind of thing, what with my full-time, non-fashion job, so it was pretty fun to get dressed up and hang out with my bloggy friends all day. highlights would have to be getting hugged by joan rivers and listening to jenna lyons from j crew, who just seemed like such an awesome, honest, down-to-earth woman. i decked myself out in my best man-repelling outfit for the day, as you can see.

the first runway show i've ever attended was a couple nights later: rachel comey, thursday evening at chelsea piers. being completely inexperienced in this sort of thing (i still think of myself as more of a pastry chef/crafter/nerd than a fashion blogger,) i got there super early and waited in line, thinking i'd miss the show if i came too late (not knowing that the show was never going to start on time.) i managed a pretty good spot in line, though, and snagged claire as she walked in, so we watched the show together. i loved it - it was so cool to see all the fashion photographers grouped at the end of the runway (and occasionally yelling things like "slow down!" at the models) and the clothes were gorgeous - simple, bold patterns in bright colors, which i'm really into at the moment, and great chunky boots and awesome hair - pinned up at the top and then super straight underneath - something i'll definitely try as soon as i get a badly-needed haircut. my camera couldn't seem to understand what to focus on when they moved so quickly, so what i managed was mostly some semi-blurry, washed out shots - but here are a few anyway.

and then - i had a bunch of other shows i was going to attend: the lake and the stars friday morning, a couple others that evening, two on saturday, tory burch and lela rose on sunday. . . but after freezing my butt off for rachel comey thursday (which was followed by a fun, delicious, and incredibly chatty sushi dinner in st. marks with a bunch of bloggers and a kate spade designer, whom i happened to sit across from and badger with questions all evening long) i slept in friday and opted for a brunch with my guy instead of a trip into the city, then for dinner with friends instead of althea harper, and. . . well, basically hung out in warm, cosy brooklyn all weekend rather than hoof it to more shows. i love fashion, and it was thrilling to be invited - but i'm a girl who enjoys simple pleasures, too, like a warm bowl of soup in my pajamas at 3 pm on a saturday, and sometimes that just sounds better than hustling to stand in line in four inch heels and 30 degree weather.

so that's all on the fashion front for the moment. lots of food updates, new acquisitions, and life changes to share in the coming days.

thanks for sticking with me -
